Shaktimaan Movie Hits a Roadblock: Mukesh Khanna Breaks His Silence on Ranveer Singh & Release Delays

For the last couple of years, 90s kids across India have been eagerly waiting for the grand cinematic return of India’s first homegrown superhero: Shaktimaan. Backed by Sony Pictures India, the movie was supposed to be a massive VFX-heavy blockbuster.

However, updates have been worryingly scarce—until now.

Mukesh Khanna, the legendary actor who created and immortalized the character, has just given a massive update on the status of the film. While assuring fans that the movie is not canceled, he revealed that it has hit significant roadblocks due to intense creative differences and casting disputes. Here is the full breakdown of why Shaktimaan is delayed and what Mukesh Khanna had to say about Bollywood's biggest stars wanting the role.

Why is the Shaktimaan Movie Delayed?

In a recent public interaction, Mukesh Khanna confirmed that while the script and initial pre-production are ready, the film is currently stuck in limbo. He stated quite bluntly that the movie has "hit a roadblock."

The primary issue? Creative control and legacy protection.

Khanna holds the intellectual property rights to the character. While Sony Pictures holds the rights to produce the film, Khanna has been fiercely protective of the superhero's core values. He has insisted that the cinematic version must not alter the essence of Shaktimaan just to make it "modern" or "edgy." He wants to ensure the character remains a moral mentor for children, just like the original 90s show.

The Ranveer Singh Casting Drama

For months, rumors have run wild that Bollywood superstar Ranveer Singh was locked in to play the titular role. Leaked reports even suggested Ranveer had started prepping for the part.

Mukesh Khanna finally addressed this directly, making some shocking revelations:

  • The Meeting: Khanna confirmed that Ranveer Singh did meet with him and expressed immense interest in the role. According to Khanna, the actor "chased them for hours" to prove his dedication.

  • The Rejection: Despite the superstar's enthusiasm, Khanna revealed he has not approved Ranveer—or any other major Bollywood star—for the role yet.

  • The Reason: Khanna strongly feels that casting a massive, established Bollywood star with a specific public image (especially someone as flamboyant as Ranveer) might overshadow the pure identity of Shaktimaan.

Will Mukesh Khanna Return as Shaktimaan?

Recently, Mukesh Khanna caused a stir when he appeared in his classic maroon and gold Shaktimaan costume for a patriotic children's quiz song. Fans immediately assumed he was reprising the role for the movie.

Khanna quickly clarified that he wore the suit simply because "I am already Shaktimaan... there cannot be another Shaktimaan without me." However, he acknowledged that for a massive three-hour theatrical film, a younger actor will eventually need to take up the mantle to carry the legacy forward.
