Mahavatar: Vicky Kaushal Unveiled as Lord Parashurama in Maddock Films’ Next Mythological Epic

If you thought the mythological action genre was slowing down, think again. Maddock Films (the powerhouse studio behind the blockbuster horror-comedy universe like Stree and Bhediya) has just dropped one of the biggest casting announcements of the year.

National Award-winning actor Vicky Kaushal is officially set to star in Mahavatar, an upcoming massive cinematic epic where he will portray the legendary warrior-sage, Lord Parashurama (the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu).

Directed by Amar Kaushik, this film marks a monumental shift for both the actor and the production house into the grand, VFX-heavy mythological genre. Here is everything we know so far about Mahavatar, from Vicky’s viral first look to the expected release date!

The First Look: A Fierce, Battle-Ready Warrior

To coincide with the auspicious occasion of Parshuram Jayanti, the makers released a highly anticipated motion poster and first-look image of Vicky Kaushal—and it immediately broke the internet.

Moving far away from his usual boy-next-door or military roles, Vicky is completely unrecognizable. The first look features him in a rugged, intensely fierce avatar with long unkempt hair, a thick beard, glowing fiery eyes, and holding the legendary battle axe (Parashu). Wearing the traditional sacred thread and a rudraksha mala, the poster promises a raw, brutal, and visually stunning portrayal of the 'Sage of War'.

What is the Plot of 'Mahavatar'?

While full plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, Mahavatar will deeply explore the mythological saga of Lord Parashurama.

According to Hindu mythology, Parashurama is an immortal (Chiranjeevi) who was born to end the tyranny of corrupt and arrogant kings who abused their power. The film is expected to focus on his relentless battle for dharma (righteousness), his meditative sagehood, and his legendary, earth-shaking confrontation with the tyrannical King Kartavirya Arjuna.

Given director Amar Kaushik's track record, fans can expect a compelling storyline grounded in rich Indian culture, elevated by spectacular, world-class visual effects.

The Cast: Who is the Female Lead?

As of right now, Vicky Kaushal is the only confirmed cast member. He is currently undergoing a massive physical transformation to build the muscular, imposing physique required for the role. He is expected to begin shooting for Mahavatar immediately after wrapping up Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War.

However, rumor mills are working overtime regarding the female lead. Early reports suggested that Shraddha Kapoor might join the project due to her fantastic working relationship with Amar Kaushik and Maddock Films. More recent industry whispers claim that former Miss Universe Harnaaz Sandhu is also in talks for a pivotal role.

When Will 'Mahavatar' Release?

Epic mythological films take time, and Maddock Films is making sure the VFX is top-notch. Mahavatar is officially slated for a grand theatrical release in December 2026, aiming to be the ultimate year-end blockbuster.

The Birth of the "Chiranjeevi Cinematic Universe"

Here is the biggest scoop that has Bollywood fans going crazy: Mahavatar is not just a standalone film. Maddock Films (the genius studio that created the Stree and Bhediya Horror-Comedy Universe) is reportedly using this movie to launch an interconnected Mythological Cinematic Universe.

According to industry insiders, this new franchise is being dubbed the "Chiranjeevi Universe." In Hindu mythology, the Chiranjeevis are the seven immortal figures who are destined to remain alive on Earth until the end of the current age (Kali Yuga). Lord Parashurama is one of these seven immortals.

By starting the universe with Vicky Kaushal’s Mahavatar, Maddock Films is setting the stage for future standalone blockbuster films based on the other immortals, such as:

  • Lord Hanuman

  • Ashwatthama (Recently seen in Kalki 2898 AD, proving the audience's massive appetite for the character)

  • King Mahabali

  • Vibhishana

  • Sage Vyasa

  • Kripacharya

If this universe is executed well, we could eventually see an Avengers-style crossover event featuring all the immortals teaming up on the big screen!

Confusion Cleared: Maddock's 'Mahavatar' vs. Hombale Films' 'Mahavatar Parshuram'

If you are feeling a little confused right now, you are not alone. There are currently two massive projects based on Lord Parashurama in the works, and they share almost the exact same title.

However, they are completely different movies made by different studios in completely different formats. Here is the breakdown:

1. The Vicky Kaushal Live-Action Film (Maddock Films)

  • Title: Mahavatar

  • The Studio: Maddock Films (Dinesh Vijan, makers of Stree)

  • The Format: A massive, big-budget Live-Action theatrical movie.

  • The Studio: Hombale Films (The powerhouse South Indian studio behind KGF, Salaar, and Kantara)
